Born Again, 2019 6' x 9' x 9', assorted STARworks clay bodies. Consisting of close to three tons of clay, this piece was constructed over the artist’s two-month residency at STARworks in early 2019 and reflects the wide range of clay bodies formulated and produced by the STARworks clay factory on site. Born Again represents birth, the discovery of self, the dissolution of ego, and death—concepts that elicit disparate emotions, yet are connected on a continuum. It may be experienced as a womb or a tomb, depending upon the viewer’s own perspective. Regardless of where one finds oneself on this gamut, the call to go inside and explore is universal. Once inside, the dense and earthy materiality of clay in the form of a catenary curve allows the softest of sounds to reverberate, wrapping the individual within their own vibration, enshrining the self, and leaving one with a sense of pacified reverence. Born Again exists in its final state as raw, unfired clay with the understanding that when no longer convenient to the space, it will be demolished and returned to the earth. Constructed and fired while in residency in Alaska, Holding Space is a simulacrum of the artist’s experience of having had emotional space “held” for her over a profound period of grief. This concept was executed in the firing of the work by pairing segments as parenthesis around the work of her fellow residents, thereby “holding space” for them in the kiln. Ultimately the segments come together to create a final holding space—a sacred circle—for either meditative thought or physical containment. This “in between” period has a way of making time slow down to a point of near stillness. Dancer Irene Hsaio choreographed a work specifically for Waiting (generously funded by the Illinois Arts Council Agency), where she captured somatically the pensive slowness indicative of times such as these; highlights of this performance can be seen here. Wake was created during a state of mourning, as a way to activate the body during a profound moment of grief. The title references the period after a person’s death; the disruption of a peaceful surface after a massive presence has passed; or the simple act of waking every morning to not finding one’s Beloved in one’s arms. Undulating like choppy waters, the top contour acts as a visual metaphor to the ups and downs of the grieving process, while the coming together of the segments creates a circle, underscoring the understanding that life and death are neither the beginning nor the end, but relationships in perpetuity. Murmuration is an interactive installation of 12 individually hand-built ceramic pods, each approximately 2 feet in diameter and 20 inches in height. Each unit is made from terra cotta with the inclusion of hand-crushed Chicago common brick (reclaimed from the artist’s neighborhood), sanded down to a satiny finish and gilded on the interior with 23-karat gold leaf. A semi-circular opening has been cut at the base of each pod as an invitation for exhibition visitors to lay down and rest their heads inside the spaces created. The coming together of the materials of terra cotta and gold reflect the values applied to these materials by society. Terra cotta and common brick, earthy and mundane; gold, arcane. Commonality and rarity fused together. Not unlike being human—experiencing flesh that fails over time, while carrying a sense of something greater inside, something gilded and precious. Inviting the visitor in to experience their own senses inside a pod creates space—sacred space—in which the visitor may awaken to this sense of something greater. The simplicity of form and the sparse use of materials evoke ancient architectural forms, while the use of the catenary curve is reminiscent of both Gothic cathedrals and the egg. As these ovum-like forms emerge from the ground, the myth of the phoenix bird rising from the ash is invoked, while the gilding reinforces a reliquary sense of reverence. Once inside a pod, a visitor will cautiously, curiously speak—the reverberating sound of their own voice in the contained space creating a sense of wonder, of awe. To an outside witness, it sounds like a murmur. To the individual inside it sounds like a voice in a cathedral. What appear to be miniature clay huts become houses of the holy, sanctified by the voices resounding inside them. Without these voices, they are simply gilded forms.
